Fenghuangopterus

1096 mm rhamphorhynchid with passive arm articulation.

Description

1096 mm rhamphorhynchid with passive arm articulation.

Development Log

  • 2025-01-12 — Fenghuangopterus Maiden flight 11.01.25 — A new model has been developed which aims to create more lifelike pterosaur flight in this case Fenghuanopterus of the rhamphorinchid family. In this model a simple passive articulation was implemented by which the arm bends down more on upstroke saving energy resulting in a more efficient stroke but also slightly less thrust. The D0576HT motors are a bit too strong for the model size of 1096mm, but stiffened by actinofibrils the wings became strong enough in the way they probably worked in real pterosaurs. As next step a lifelike body and head will be added and the model will be painted. In the Testflight the left wing had a little bit less tension than the other, this made the model turn to the right, which made forward flight more inefficient and control more difficult. Furthermore the model uses a drone F3 flight controller with an early version of OrniFlight and thus also features a gyro, however the stabilization system has been deactivated because it is not yet completely functional. • 2025-01-14 — Fenghuangopterus test flight with fuselage 14.01.25 — Due to unequal tension of the wing the model was alwasys turning right and cannot turn left. When the CG was put to front the model became able to turn more easily but was climbing less. Also the neck broke and further testing will be done when it is repaired and model be painted.
